My name is Marnie Slater and I am from Salt Lake City, Utah.  You may recognize me as your server here at Vertical Diner or at Sage’s Café.  When I am not at work, I am either working on my Bachelor’s degree in Art and Math Teaching or working on my next piece of art.

I love to draw and paint; my favorite mediums are sharpie, acrylic and watercolors which are all represented here.  I love to use very bright colors and dark outlines.  My older works do not have a unifying theme, but are paintings that were done from a collection of personal photos or studies of different kinds of art techniques.  Some of the newer pieces represent the direction my work is going.  I like to look at all kinds of images to inspire my art, especially microscopic images.  My desire is simple: I want to extract the beauty of the microscopic world and transform it into something more recognizable and viewable to the naked eye.

In these paintings I blend several different microscopic images into compositions.  In creating these compositions my goal was to shape landscapes in such a way that they become like alien planets or imaginative worlds.  When composing these works of art I feel a sense of exploration and the strange pleasure that comes with confronting the unknown.  Most of all, I want my paintings to be like a voyage that impart a sense of wonder and discovery in the viewer and a desire for investigation, especially of the microscopic world.
